Finnish game developer Kukouri Mobile Entertainment was named the best indie developer at the Mobile Game Awards in London.

The awards were held for the second time and numerous games were celebrated in different categories, including Epic Games and its flagship project Fortnite. The Kotka-based Kukouri came out on top in the category for independent developers thanks to its games Pixel Worlds and Tiny Troopers, which have downloaded over 35 million times to date.

“Mobile Game Awards is special because the industry itself picks the winners,” explainedKim Soares, CEO of Kukouri. “10 finalists are picked out of hundreds of companies. After the finalists are chosen, more than a hundred industry professionals vote for the winner.”

Kukouri is a six-person team working in the tight-knit gaming community in Kotka. The city is home to a number of other gaming companies and the educational facilities to support the industry in the future.

“The Finnish scene is small and friendly: companies aren’t competing against each other for anything except maybe skilled labour, of which there’s a perpetual shortage,” said Soares.
