Finnish films win awards in Poland

Finnish comedy Heavy Trip follows a fictional heavy metal band on the journey of a lifetime.Harri Räty/ Making Movies

Finnish documentary Putting Lipstick on a Pig (Att sminka en gris) and Finnish comedy Heavy Trip (Hevi reissu) were awarded at the Warsaw International Film Festival.

’sPutting Lipstick on a Pig had its international premiere at the film festival organised for the 34th time in the Polish capital, where it won an award for Best Documentary Feature.

The documentary is set in the autonomous Åland Islands in the Finnish archipelago and tells the story of a local bookkeeper who swindled more than 800 000 euros from her customers and gambled it all away online.

and Juuso Laatio’s Heavy Trip was also recognised in Warsaw with an audience award in the Feature Films category. The film follows a fictional northern Finnish heavy metal band on the road to play at the hottest heavy metal festival in Norway.

The most expensive Finnish comedy of all time, Heavy Trip had its world premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW) in the US last March. Since then, it has gone on to win several awards during its festival run and been picked up by distributors in the US, Germany, China, Spain and Portugal, among others.
