Finnish eggs heading for Japan

The agreement on licensing was secured by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland and Finnish Food Safety Authority during a visit to Tokyo. The successful negotiations were carried out in connection with Japan’s most significant food-related fair this year, FOODEX, where 12 Finnish food and beverage companies displayed their wares at a shared Food from Finland stand.

“It is great to find new markets for high-quality Finnish food in the world,” says Minister of Agriculture and ForestryJari Leppä. “The objective set in the Government programme was to improve our trade balance in foodstuffs by 500 million euros by 2020. Eggs gaining access to the Japanese market is yet another major achievement in terms of good news in the export sector.”

A licence to export poultry meat to Japan was secured already a year ago. More recently news emerged that HKScan would begin to export its premium-quality pork to China, while K Group and Alibaba have opened an online store for Finnish foods to serve the Chinese food market.

The Finnish food industry has an excellent reputation internationally, due in part to the good situation regarding animal diseases and responsible agricultural practices in the country.
