EUR 62 million deal greenlit for Nocart in Kenya

The announcement follows the earlier signing of a 62 million-euro contract for the delivery of the plant. Advancement of the project has been awaiting the completion of the buyer’s permitting processes and power purchase agreement process.

Nocart is also involved in the project as a co-owner of the newly founded independent power production company, which has a 20-year contract for selling electricity to Kenya’s national grid.

The plant will be constructed in multiple stages. The first 10MW of the project is slated for completion by the end of 2020 and the remaining 25MW in early 2023.

According to Nocart CEO Vesa Korhonen, this constitutes an important starting point for the company’s gasification technology. “We are now able to make energy from waste in a commercially viable, profitable way,” he says. “This is also a big step forward for our PPA-business model.”

This particular waste-to-energy project is the first of its kind in Africa in terms of type and size.

Nocart’s presence continues to grow on the African market. The company received an order for a 10MW grid-feed solar plant in Kenya last December, and has also made headlines in Zambia, Malawi and Nigeria.
