Finnish and Chinese education co-operation has taken another concrete step forward with the launch of a winter sport management degree, meant to provide Chinese students the knowhow to prepare for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The snow and ski resort management degree programme, bought by the Beijing Sport University from the University of Lapland and the Lapland University of Applied Sciences (UAS), kicked off with 13 Chinese degree students this autumn.

Lapland UAS’ degree programme in hospitality management will provide a tried-and-tested framework for the programme, which will be complemented by leadership education from the University of Lapland.

“This degree programme is a result of enduring and driven co-operation. At the same time, it is wonderful evidence of how to create something new and unique by combining the competences of two universities,” saysMauri Ylä-Kotola, the head of the University of Lapland.

The Beijing Sport University has been actively involved in tailoring the programme to its needs, including a focus on leadership training and a strong practical working life element.

“I can proudly state that we’re pioneers in the field regarding pedagogy and working life contacts, which is a valuable base to build novel content,” says the head of the Lapland UAS, Riitta Rissanen.

The degree programme is part of an education co-operation agreement signed in 2017 in Beijing, which consists of plans for student and personnel exchange in the future as well as collaboration in research.
