Finnish firms innovate with global partners

First to Neste, which is collaborating with Air BP to deliver sustainable aviation fuel to airlines and airports in Sweden in 2019. The two companies are looking to develop a viable supply-chain solution in the country by combining Neste’s expertise in producing sustainable low-carbon aviation fuel with Air BP’s distribution channels.

Next in line is Nokia, which is collaborating with Czech operator Nordic Telecom to offer broadband public protection and disaster relief, and IoT services across the Czech Republic. The two companies have launched the world’s first mission critical communications-ready LTE network in the newly opened 410–430 MHz band. The new network enables, among other things, disaster relief responders to use real-time video and data services.

Nokia is also collaborating with Cellcom Israel to provide real-time environmental data in Israel by deploying its sensing-as-a-service solution on Cellcom Israel’s existing radio infrastructure. The partnership aims to deliver real-time data on factors such as noise, wind, dust, air quality and hazardous gases to cities, enterprises, and safety and other public authorities.

The Finnish telecommunications company has also successfully installed the first commercial 5G network in Latin America in collaboration with Uruguayan state-owned operator ANTEL. The ultra-low latencies and high speed of 5G were demonstrated to local authorities during a press event by using a virtual-reality sports application called penalty kick.

Moving on to Wärtsilä, which will supply a 48 MW engine power plant based on its smart power-generation technology to the Sokoto cement production facility in northwest Nigeria. The plant will enhance the output and reduce the carbon footprint of a new cement line being constructed at the facility.

Finally to Metso, which has won a major contract from Albemarle Corporation to supply pyro-processing and comminution equipment for a new lithium hydroxide processing plant in southwestern Australia.
