Primoceler sets sights on restoring eyesight
Tampere-based optical products manufacturer Primoceler has developed a glass package for retinal implants in co-operation with Nano Retina, a bionic retina developer from Israel.
Its proprietary packaging solution offers full optical and radio frequency transparency, making it possible to not only charge and reprogramme the implant wirelessly but also to transmit data to and from it.
has also developed glass micro-bonding technology that creates a hermetic seal to protect both the patient and the components of the implant. Because the patented technology uses neither heat nor adhesives to form the bond, it enables the manufacturing of smaller and smaller implant packages while remaining completely bio-compatible.
“Our glass packaging for medical implants is one more example of how glass micro-bonding can change the world for good,” Ville Hevonkorpi, the CEO at Primoceler, says in a press release.
Glass, he believes, has the potential to supersede ceramics and titanium as the standard packaging material for medical implants because of improved optical and radio transparency and because, unlike titanium, it poses no risk of inducing an allergic reaction in the patient.
“More glass-packaged medical implants will soon be available to improve patients’ quality of life in a variety of situations. As that happens, we can expect to see market attitudes shift regarding titanium and ceramics. Glass encapsulation is the next revolution in medical implant packaging,” he predicts.
